Daily Badging Protocol: Preventing Door Alarms
Field Personnel: Data Center
Overview
All field personnel are required to watch the 2-minute badging protocol video below once per day before beginning work, as part of the daily Data Center SPA process.
Completion is tracked with a signature and timestamp per viewer, and rolls up into the Safety Training Report.
Required Video: Secure Badge Access and Door Use
The video walks through eight short scenarios covering proper badge use:
- Wearing your badge visibly at all times
- Checking the door and knocking before badging
- Badging in and entering your PIN
- Waiting for the green light before entering
- What to do on a red light or access-denied
- Avoiding simultaneous badging
- Preventing tailgating and door propping
- Door timing (60-second rule) and emergency door use
- Watch the full video before starting badge-controlled work each day.
- Sign and timestamp confirmation of viewing, tied to that day's Data Center SPA.
- Follow the protocol above at every badge-controlled door for the remainder of the shift.
Step-by-Step Badging Protocol
This is the full protocol shown in the video, summarized for quick reference:
|
Step |
Action |
Why It Matters |
|
1 |
Wear your badge visibly |
Badge worn between neck and waist at all times. |
|
2 |
Check the door before badging |
Look through the door window (if present) and knock to confirm no one else is badging in at the same time. |
|
3 |
Badge and enter PIN |
Swipe your badge, then enter your PIN when prompted. |
|
4 |
Wait for the green light |
Do not open the door until the green light confirms access. Never proceed on a red light — stop and contact site security. |
|
5 |
Avoid simultaneous badging |
If two people badge at once, neither should proceed. Both must call site security to confirm who actually received access. |
|
6 |
No tailgating or door propping |
Never hold the door for another badge holder, and never prop the door open. |
|
7 |
Move through within 60 seconds |
A pre-alarm sounds at 15 seconds; a full alarm triggers at 60 seconds. Pass through promptly and let the door close/secure. |
|
8 |
Emergency doors are for emergencies only |
Never use an emergency exit for routine access. |
Common Alarm Triggers to Avoid
|
Common Trigger |
Resulting Alarm Behavior |
|
Proceeding on a red light |
Alarm triggers immediately when the door is forced or opened without access-granted confirmation. |
|
Two people badging at the same time |
The person who did NOT receive the green light will trigger an alarm if they walk through without calling security first. |
|
Tailgating (entering without badging) |
Alarm triggers the next time that person badges out, since the system never recorded their entry. |
|
Holding the door for someone else |
Creates an unlogged entry, which causes an alarm on that person's next badge-out. |
|
Door left open past 60 seconds |
Pre-alarm sounds at 15 seconds; full alarm sounds at 60 seconds if the door isn't closed and secured. |
|
Using an emergency door for routine access |
Emergency exits are alarmed by design and reserved for actual emergencies. |
Daily Tracking Requirement
To confirm adherence, each viewer must:
Note for Site Leads
-
Daily completion reports should reflect one signed confirmation per person, per day, linked to the Data Center SPA for that shift.
-
Personnel without a recorded confirmation should be flagged before badge access is used for the day.
Questions or Access Issues
If you receive a red light, experience a simultaneous badge event, or have any questions about this protocol, stop and contact site security immediately rather than attempting to proceed through the door.
